"Rubber" is the third album from
Gilby Clarke (ex. Kill For Thrills & Guns N´Roses). Like the previous albums this album contains a lot of gust musicians like Eric Singer (Badlands, Kiss, Alice Cooper), Phil Soussan (Ozzy Osbourne), James Lomenzo (White Lion) and Mike Fasano (Warrant).
I was a big fan of the first album "Pawnshop Guitars" but the follow up "The Hangover" was a bit disappointing.
Gilby Clarke is back on track with Rubber, which is a great album consisting of booze rock ala The Rolling Stones.
Gilbys musical roots are the English bands from the 60 and 70´s. The recipe of the album is 3 or 4 chords and then you got a great 3 minute rock song.
The remake of Janis Joplin's "Mercedes Benz" is a party favorite. That song gets the
Gilby Clarke treatment with Hammond Organ, gospel singer and a kick ass Rhythm guitar. The use of the mellotrone on a few tracks gives a Beatles-like emotion.
"Sorry I can't Write a Song About You" is a country rocker with slide guitar. The best tracks are the melodic "Something's Wrong with You", the straight motorcycle Rocker "The Hells Angels" along with "Kilroy was Here". I also have a soft spot for the Enuff Z´nuff sounding "Technicolor Stars" with a real cool riff from Gilby.
Even though the album contains blues, country and hard rocking tunes it is still a consistent album. It is not trendy at all but just good time Rock ´n´ Roll played by skilled musicians with love for this style.
Gilby has produced the album himself and provided the album with a proper 70's sound made in the nineties.
