Rock Star Supernova is certainly one of 2006's most anticipated releases. The album originates in a TV show where the concept was to find a singer for this hand picked all star band.
First of all, I haven't seen a single episode of the TV show, so I am not biased regarding singer Lukas Rossi - I had no expectations for his voice. However, when you have a band consisting of
Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted and
Gilby Clarke I expect full a blown Rock album.
Rock Star Supernova has come up with a bunch of polished power pop tunes where almost all songs disappoint. The album is produced by Butch Walker and sounds very alike his solo albums. Butch Walker has co-written lots of the songs, so it makes sense!
"Supernova" does not make the best possible use of the musicianship and huge talent of the prominent players. The band members are quite anonymous and fail to set their mark on the songs - you miss a song where
Tommy Lee lays down a groove like
Wild Side. He is such a great drummer but to be honest anyone could have played his parts on this album.
Gilby Clarke is a bluesy feel player, but it doesn't help much on these soulless songs. On Gilby's solo albums he proves that it's possible to play this kind of power pop, but still keeping a gritty Rock N' Roll edge. The songs Gilby has co-written are the highlights of the album. The T-Rex 70's Glam Rock alike
Be Yourself and 5 other Clichés has most potential along with the power ballad
Headspin. The last mentioned song is actually written by the rookie Lukas Rossi
I wonder what target group the band aims at? It is certainly NOT the fans of
Gilby Clarke/Guns N' Roses or
Mötley Crüe and definitely not Metallica... I don't get it!

I personally dont mind the album.. Better than alot of crap thats come out this year. Lukas Rossi sounds surprisingly good in comparison to the show. Would I waste money to see them live when they hit here - hell no :). All in all its a little more pop than I would normally buy but hey.. |

This album is very disappointing , Butch Walker is my favorite producer and musician yet here he fails to bring out the musician's strong points!......Very mundane drumming by the most energetic drummer ever......and no guitar solo's?????????????????????????.....And the songs are so basic a 13 year old kid could come have made these songs....OUCH!...........2/10 |
