Plot

Something sinister has come to the shores of Erin Island, unbeknownst to the quaint population of this sleepy fishing village resting somewhere off Ireland’s coast. First, some fishermen go missing. Then there is the rash of whale carcasses suddenly washing up on the beach. When the murders start, it’s up to two mismatched cops – an irresponsible alcoholic and his new partner, a by-the-book woman from the mainland – to protect the townsfolk from the giant, bloodsucking, tentacled aliens that prey upon them. Their only weapon, they discover, is booze. If they want to survive the creatures’ onslaught, everyone will have to get very, very drunk!

Quick Review

This low-key horror comedy is a small gem. The atmosphere is sufficiently empowering to make the movie feel just right. The actors give off the sense that they have an absolutely smashing time and they give the movie a sense of urgency, brooding portent and a liberating sense of freedom. The first half is brilliant but then the movie runs slightly out of ideas as it doesn't quite meet its grand setup in the most satisfying way in its final act. But I'll have to watch it again soon anyway to see if my opinion changes. What the movie successfully does is breathe life into characters I would happily spend another movie with.

If you, like I, have a weakness for Tremors, you have to check this out and if not, do it anyway, it is an irresistibly charming movie.
